Birth Injuries and Hearing Loss
Neonates are susceptible to many damaging forces, both inside the birth canal and during birth delivery. In this course, you will learn about the types of resulting birth injuries, which include extracranial hemorrhages, skull fractures, and damage to peripheral nerve structures. You will also learn about hearing loss, which can occur in the inner, middle, or outer ear due to birth-related causes or outside forces. A universal hearing screening for infants is now widely encouraged to detect hearing impairments. (53 minutes)

Glucose Management Challenges in the Intermediate Care Neonate
An infant of a diabetic mother (IDM) is at risk for a number of serious conditions. This course explores the pathophysiologic effects of maternal diabetes on the fetus and reviews perinatal interventions to stabilize the neonate. In addition, this course reviews glucose homeostasis in the neonate as well as examines the causes and treatment of neonatal hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. (76 minutes)

Hematologic System and Disease for the Intermediate Care Neonate
The hematologic system of the fetus undergoes significant evolution as the fetus develops, and it continues to change as the neonate transitions from the gestational to the postnatal environment. This course provides an overview of the development and changes in the neonatal hematologic system. It also explores common neonatal blood disorders and treatments. (94 minutes)

Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus, a condition that occurs with an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain, can lead to brain atrophy or convulsions. This course describes the pathophysiology of hydrocephalus. It also explains the risk factors and postoperative management strategies you need when caring for the neonate diagnosed with hydrocephalus. (46 minutes)

Psychosocial Aspects of Nursing in the Neonatal ICU
The psychosocial aspects of care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are complex. Not only are family members trying to cope with a medical crisis, but they are also often experiencing feelings of guilt and grief. Having a critically ill infant in the NICU can easily overwhelm parents' normal coping channels. Many of the parents are adolescent or first-time parents and may be particularly vulnerable to the stresses of having a baby who requires intensive care. As an NICU nurse, you can help parents to cope with a difficult situation and, ideally, to make a healthy transition to parenthood. (58 minutes)

Respiratory Monitoring and Therapy
A number of techniques have been developed for monitoring and assessing the respiratory system of the fetus, the premature infant, and the neonate. This course surveys these techniques, including amniocentesis, arterial blood gas sampling, and respiratory monitoring devices, and examines some of the basics of oxygen therapy. (58 minutes)

Sepsis and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome
This course provides a comprehensive overview of two common multisystem problems occurring in the intermediate-care neonate. The first, sepsis, is a consideration for the at-risk premature neonate residing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This course reviews the development of the immune system, sources of infection, and risk factors. It also explores management strategies for sepsis, including antibiotic therapy, immunotherapy, and multisystem support. The course then covers the second common multisystem problem, neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), which stems from maternal drug abuse. (98 minutes)
