Common Psychological Stressors in the Geriatric Population
Inherently, as people age, their bodies go through physiologic changes. Although many of these changes can occur across all ages, their prevalence in the geriatric population creates common psychological stressors. This course looks at some of the changes brought on by chronic infection and the immune system, chronic illness, death and dying, pain, cancer, and substance abuse. The course also explores some of the assessment tools available, some of the associated medical problems, and the roles and responsibilities of the members of the healthcare team. (77 minutes)

Influences on Health and Illness
In this course, you will explore several key variables influencing healthcare for the senior population, including changing demographic trends, cultural diversity, and socioeconomic status. Caring for adults requires an awareness of these changing variables as they impact the health and healthcare of the senior population. You will examine the ways that cultural diversity challenges healthcare management. You will also see that socioeconomic variables play a major role: Chronic illness often reduces an individual's ability to live independently, and decline in functional ability results in greater reliance on others that, in turn, affects the families and caregivers of the senior population. Finally, you will examine some of the legal and regulatory issues in the long-term care industry as well as ethical dilemmas concerning patient rights, self-determination, and advance directives to guide end-of-life care. Hispanic Cultures
It is estimated that by the year 2030, minorities will account for 40 percent of the population in the United States. Hispanics are the fastest growing minority, and by the year 2050, the Hispanic population in the United States will triple from 30 million to 90 million Larmer, B. (1999, July). These statistics help paint a portrait of the country's Hispanic population in the not-too-distant future, which will require healthcare organizations and professionals to fundamentally change how they function. The healthcare field is currently feeling the impact of the Hispanic community's growth, and this warrants a thorough understanding of Hispanic cultures and people. (141 minutes)
