Concepts of Infection Control
All individuals who provide care to people in the healthcare environment are exposed to a variety of sources of infection. It is important for all employees in this environment to have a basic understanding of the concepts of infection. Staff members must work together to prevent the spread of infection to patients, visitors, and other personnel. Infections can be exceptionally harmful to individuals with chronic diseases or to those who are very young or very old. This course will help unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs) better understand infection risks and take the necessary precautions. It outlines the chain of infection and the role of microorganisms as sources of infection. The course also describes universal and isolation precautions, proper hand washing techniques, personal protection and sterile techniques, and OSHA's blood-borne pathogen standard. (77 minutes)

Other factors affecting patient safety include the patient's illness or injury, age, mental status, and potential for falls. Unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs) must recognize hazards within the healthcare setting, potential for injury, and preventive measures to minimize patient injury. This course outlines patient safety in the healthcare setting, with a focus on fire and oxygen safety. (33 minutes)
