Pain Management During Labor
Pain is perhaps the first word that comes to mind when the thought of childbirth arises. It is only fairly recently that management of this pain has been ''allowed.''  Even up until the 1960s, ''twilight sleep'' was considered successful pain management: Women still experienced the pain of labor, but they simply didn't remember it. As women demanded greater control over the childbirth experience, childbirth education was born. It was here that women and their coaches learned comfort measures that allowed them more control. These measures can be used alone or in conjunction with some of the pharmacologic pain measures. This course includes a discussion of the nonpharmacologic comfort measures along with information about the opioid analgesics. (81 minutes)

Pharmacological Pain Management
As a nurse, you will be responsible for both assessing a woman in labor and managing her care during the different stages of labor. Many women will choose to have their labor pain controlled by pharmacologic means. Other women will plan to use non-pharmacologic methods, but will find analgesia necessary at the time of labor to ease overwhelming pain. In this course, you will learn about systemic analgesia, regional anesthesia, general anesthesia, the effects and uses of each, and procedures for administering them. (57 minutes)

Infants placed within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are faced with developmental needs, ranging from the integration of the various subsystems to the need to interact with their environment.  Developmentally appropriate care harmonizes both the developmental needs of infants and the medical care specifically tailored to those infants.  This course helps you understand how infants mature and the cues they use to communicate. It also describes the synactive theory of development, organizational support strategies, and kangaroo care. (82 minutes)
